SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd today unveiled its new corporate logo to change the mindset of Malaysians and show that the bank is for everybody and not just Muslims, its managing director Datuk Zukri Samat said today. The new identity, which was launched by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin, projected a contemporary universal modern image using capital letters in dark grey and maroon colours instead of the Arabic writing and green colours in the previous logo. Zukri said non-Muslim customers currently represented less than 10 percent of the bank's client base which at present stood at over one million customers and the pioneer of Islamic banking in Malaysia aimed to have more non-Muslim customers. Besides changing the corporate logo, all the 90 bank branches around the country will be remodelled under the new image, including the information technology (IT) capabilities, he told reporters.Zukri said the new Shah Alam branch would serve as a pilot project for the bank's transformation process. He said the bank spent about RM1 million on the Shah Alam branch and the remaining branches would be transformed in stages over the next 12 months, with the cost depending on the size of each branch. The transformation of the bank's IT system which has been in use for the past 15 years would take another 15 months with the minimum cost estimated at RM100 million, Zukri said."We are fixing a moving aeroplane, so we cannot fixed all the engines in one go," he said in explaining why the transformation needed to be carried out in stages.Besides upgrading the physical aspects of the bank, Bank Islam has sent more than 2,000 of its employees for training in strategic thinking for the senior management and training in courtesy, personal grooming and effective communication for the frontline staff in the last five months, he added.Zukri said the bank, which started the first Islamic banking operations in the country in 1983, wanted to be a global leader in Islamic banking, not necessarily big in terms of assets but as a source of reference in Islamic banking methodology.
