Islamic Countries Holding Taxation Conference

TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar: Representatives from taxation agencies of 30 Islamic countries yesterday (27/10) began attending the fifth conference of the Association of Tax Authorities of Islamic Countries (ATAIC) in Nusa Dua, Bali.

The conference, which will continue until October 31, is also attended by non-members as observers.

“We had members from 11 countries before but the number has now risen to 30,” said Tax Director
Justify FullGeneral at Finance Department Darmin Nasution after the opening of the conference.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said the conference was to arrange budget basics including reform of banking administration and tax as regards Syariah finance instruments.

Sri said she expected that through the conference, members could learn from the lessons of other members “

For example, Indonesia can learn how other Islamic countries distribute alms,” she said.

ATAIC was founded on October 15, 2003 with the purpose of encouraging cooperation among Islamic countries in order to improve policy and tax administration.

Besides holding a yearly conference, ATAIC provides research materials, analysis, and publication of tax information.

Before Indonesia, ATAIC conferences were held in Malaysia, Iran, Pakistan and Kuwait.

The Advocacy Director at the Finance Department Djoko Slamet Surjoputro mentioned that items on the agenda at the conference including tax on Syariah-based transaction.

Discussion of this matter is necessary for Indonesia so that it can learn from the experience of other countries.
